The Counseling Center assists NC State students experiencing personal, academic or vocational problems. The goal of the Counseling Center is to provide students with professional counseling services and outreach to help them cope with issues that may impede successful academic performance. The Counseling Center also offers crisis intervention and psychological/psychiatric assessment as well as consultation with others who have concerns about the mental/emotional state of NC State students. Our services are primarily short-term in nature and we make referrals to other helping professionals and community agencies as appropriate.

Essential Job Duties

The Assistant Director is required to perform administrative duties, provide direct service to students, consult with university faculty/staff, and participate in supervision and training. This person will assist in developing, revising, and maintaining policies and
procedures to ensure adherence to best clinical practices, and legal and ethical codes.

This person will be responsible for coordination of multidisciplinary teams/committees
and will directly supervise a number of clinical staff (as assigned).

Assistant Directors will carry a reduced clinical load that may include walk-in/crisis
assessment, after-hours on-call, individual, couples, and group psychotherapy, clinical
consultation, outreach programming, and clinical supervision. There is an expectation
that Assistant Directors assist in hiring, training, supervising and consulting with all
clinical staff, including trainees, as needed.

This staff member serves on the Administrative Team, along with the Executive Director,
Associate Director, and Assistant Directors. The Assistant Directors will assume
supervision of Counseling Center operations in the absence of the Executive Director and Associate Director.

Members of the Administrative Team will be expected to submit reports and/or data to
the Executive Director as requested and will serve on committees within and outside of
the Center as required. Members of the Administrative Team are expected to support the
Center’s mission and values.

Duties and Responsibilities:
One full-time, 12-month position with responsibility to assist in all areas of Counseling
Center functioning including:
a) Individual and group counseling of NC State students/clients (personal, academic,
and vocational assessment and counseling); psychological assessment; developmental
and crisis counseling; couples counseling; evaluation of students for withdrawal from the
University
b) Development and participation in Outreach programming
c) Consultation with faculty staff, parents, and others
d) Providing evaluations and recommendations regarding students with academic and
conduct problems
e) Participation in “on-call” and end of the day coverage for emergencies.
f) General administrative responsibilities
g) Oversight of center’s program evaluation and assessment

Assessment and Program Evaluation Responsibilities:
a) Manage Business Continuity and disaster response plans
b) manage data collection development and oversight
c) In conjunction with the Technology coordinator, Coordinate all IT related needs/requests including computers, systems and phones
d) Manage EHR (Titanium) data collection, updates, and user interface such as data forms and dashboard
e) Oversee annual report completion, data collection, analysis and program evaluation
f) Collaborate on assessment needs of training programs

Minimum Education and Experience

Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

  • Demonstrated administrative and leadership/supervisory experience.
  • Strong clinical, management, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to multicultural competencies.
  • Ability to handle crises and complex clinical situations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience in handling crisis situations
  • Advanced experience in mental health outreach education and prevention.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in counseling or psychology
  • Post-licensure clinical/counseling experience
  • Experience with program development and evaluation preferred.
  • Graduation from a CACREP or APA accredited program.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

Appropriate licensure by mental health discipline must be obtained/maintained according to North Carolina laws.
