Job Title: Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Sign Language Interpreter
 

Job Description: Effectively and impartially facilitate communication between persons who are Deaf or hard of hearing and hearing persons; including but not limited to administrators, staff teachers, service providers, parents and peers within the educational environment. School hours are 7:20-2:10.
 

The Sign Language Interpreter will maintain high a level of professionalism, responsibility, consistency, and respect at all times.
 

Reports to:
 

Principal/Headmaster
 

Responsiblities:
 

1. Interpret classroom activities, teacher instruction, peer conversations, student contributions, films, guest speakers and stories read aloud into the appropriate mode.
2. Interpret voice to sign and sign to voice.
3. Maintain confidentiality within the educational team and follow RID’s Code of Professional Conduct:
? Follow the student’s IEP
? Maintain confidentiality
? Maintain professional boundaries
? Provide an interpretation that meets the linguistic needs of the student
? Conduct oneself appropriate to the academic setting
? Demonstrate respect for students and colleagues
? Engage in professional development activities
? Prepare for classroom academic content: preview text- books, movies, lesson plans, etc.
4. Provide the best possible setting for student viewing through proper dress, placement, distance and lighting.
5. Comply with Boston Public School and individual building philosophy, policies and procedures.
6. Meet as needed with members of the educational team.
7. Interpret at assigned schools and school activities outside the building.
8. Interpret/transliterate for staff meetings, staff professional development, IEPs, and parent-teacher meetings.
9. Perform other related duties as requested by the Principal.
 

Qualifications
Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Forty-eight (48) Credit Hours of College Coursework or an Associate's Degree, or a passing score on one of the two following Formalized Standardized Assessments: ParaPro Assessment (http://www.ets.org/parapro/ ) or WorkKeys Certificate of Proficiency for Teacher Assistants (http://www.act.org/workkeys/profcert/index.html ).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Demonstrated success in establishing community partnerships and networks
  • Experience working with young people
  • Demonstrated experience working with community based organizations particularly those that work with migrants and immigrant families
  • Sensitivity to student cultural and special needs
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Must be a resident of the City of Boston or be willing to move to the City of Boston if hired.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
Preferred:
 

1. Bachelor’s Degree
2. Graduate of an Interpreter Training Program
3. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
4. EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) 3.5 or higher
5. Experience interpreting/transliterating in an educational setting
6. RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) certification
